The Association $7.98 Never known as an album band, with the release of The Association, this band proved to listeners that it was moving in the right direction. Helped along with such Top 40 singles as "Goodbye Forever" and "Dubuque Blues," the Association were expanding their horizons in the ever changing market of pop/rock. Other highlights include "Look at Me, Look at You" and "Under Branches," and although The Association didn't exactly burn up the album charts, it did help to show that there was more to this band than just Top Ten singles. Well worth the effort in seeking out. ~ James Chrispell, All Music GuidePerformers: Gary "Jules" Alexander - Guitar, Vocals; Ted Bluechel - Drums, Vocals; Brian Cole - Bass, Clarinet, Vocals; Russ Giguere - Guitar, Vocals; Terry Kirkman - Drums, Vocals, Wind; Larry Ramos - Guitar, Harmonica, Saxophone, Vocals; Jim Yester - Guitar, Keyboards, Saxophone, Vocals |

Carolina $12.98 Country music outlaw Eric Church blasted onto the scene in 2006 with his jaw-dropping debut effort, Sinners Like Me. The North Carolina native quickly earned a dedicated following and a reputation for putting on a killer live show. Carolina, the singer/songwriter's 2009 sophomore release, is as raw and real as they come out of Nashville -- where style is often passedoff as substance. Like Sinners Like Me, Carolina is a from-the-gut collection filled to the brim with traditionally rooted country music that is masterfully tempered with Southern baked rock. From the floor rattling fury of "Ain't Killed Me Yet" to the heart tugging honesty of "Those I've Loved" Church soars higher here than he did on his critically praised debut. The characters who live and breathe between the chords and melodies in Church's songs are as authentic as the well-worn frets on his acoustic guitar. The guy on the chugging "Lotta Boot Left to Fill," who claims Johnny Cash would have "whipped" the ass of those country posers who insist on name-checking the late "Man In Black" in their songs, bears a strong resemblance to Church himself. Loud guitars, gritty vocals, and more soul than a Sunday morning sermon best sums up Carolina. ~ Todd Sterling, RoviPerformers: Bruce Bouton - Dobro, Pedal Steel; Luke Bulla - Fiddle; Mark Casstevens - Banjo, Guitar (Acoustic); Stephanie Chapman - Vocals (Background); Steve Fishell - Dobro, Pedal Steel; Jay Joyce - Fender Rhodes, Guitar (Electric), Hammond B3, Organ (Hammond); Gary Morse - Dobro, Pedal Steel; Russ Pahl - Dobro, Pedal Steel; Bruce Sutton - Banjo; Bryan Sutton - Banjo, Guitar (Acoustic), Mandolin; Russell Terrell - Vocals (Background); Ilya Toshinsky - Banjo, Guitar (Acoustic); |

The Association Live $9.98 This 75-minute album, originally a double-LP (recorded live at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City on April 3, 1970) is a valiant attempt at capturing the Association's concert sound on record. Unfortunately, it fails for several reasons, beginning with the fact that the instrumental mix is very bass-heavy -- even with adjustments to compensate, this overwhelms much of the rest of the band on several key numbers. Additionally, the group's singing, though more than adequate, lacks the presence needed to give their harmonies the necessary radiance to make the music fully attractive, coming off instead as anemic. The real problem is that cutting a live album was a thankless task for this group -- so much of their sound was dependent on a studio-driven perfection -- that live recording was an exercise in futility (let's put it this way -- the Beach Boys pulled this off more than once, but they had a resident genius around part of the time doing their arrangements; the Association: no genius in the ranks). "Goodbye Columbus" is a case in point, it's a breezy, cheerful number that gets a spirited performance, but it still sounds thin and emaciated because the single is the way that song is supposed to sound, period. By contrast, their rendition of "Get Together," complete with lyrical and soaring harmonies, is a masterpiece of a kind -- or it would be if it were a prelude to a studio recording where the balances could be refined and perfected. As it is, the band often sound clunky on their instruments, even as they sing their hearts out. "Seven Man Band" features some ferocious fuzz guitar that gets buried in mix. Some songs do work -- "Cherish" is a bit emaciated but ultimately makes for interesting listening, while "Requiem for the Masses" and "Enter the Young" come off well on any terms. It's hardly worth the inflated price of the Japanese imported CD, except for the most hardcore completists. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music GuidePerformers: Gary "Jules" Alexander - Guitar, Vocals; Ted Bluechel - Drums, Vocals; Brian Cole - Bass, Clarinet, Vocals; Russ Giguere - Guitar, Vocals; Terry Kirkman - Drums, Vocals, Wind; Larry Ramos - Guitar, Harmonica, Saxophone, Vocals; Jim Yester - Guitar, Keyboards, Saxophon |
