Why can't I pitch right???
I play softball and pitched for 4 years, and I'm a fair pitcher- not many walks. I pitch at an ok speed, but I can't do it the "right" way. Once I try to speed up the pitches and actually snap my wrist, only about one in ten pitches are strikes. I've tried using different holds on the ball, letting go at different times, and even changing my wind up style, but nothing works. Either the ball rolls once it gets halfway, or it goes way inside or outside. I'd kill the batter if I pitched like that in a real game! Of course, if I go back to my normal, slower way, I do fine but coaches are always telling me to snap my wrist. How do I improve?
pitching is all about physics. if your windmill is slightly off trajectory, your pitch will be inside or outside. if your wrist snap is off, you'll be high or low. its hard to "re-train" a pitcher once they've learned a certain way. however, the best judge of what you do right and wrong is you.
I suggest first getting a video camera and taping your deliveries-- then watching them over and over to see the similarities and the differences. Approach it like a physics or science problem. after each delivery, record where the ball landed-- you'll be able to see what you did to make that result.
if you want to implement the "snap" then starting over from the basics is the best. start with just the wrist, snappig the ball in the air, then go to the elbow, wrist snap, then go to the bicep, elbow, wrist snap and work your way up around the "clock" of the wind up. 6PM, then back to 3PM then back to 12 PM then back to 9PM then a full windmill. after that, add the hip door shut part, then the step. then the speed.
don't get frustrated, just look at your "problem" systematically, stay positive and work hard.
