How To Decorate A Birthday Cake
Is a loved one's birthday coming soon? Or do you have something special to celebrate? This calls for a cake! And a great way to make it special is to decorate it. Decorating birthday cakes take only a little of your imagination. Thousands of themes are available, from popular kids' characters such as Dora the Explorer or Winnie the Pooh, to hobby and sports themes.
First, you will need a cake: you can either make it or buy it in a store; it's totally up to you. You will also need icing piping bags. These are disposable and can be bought at most supermarkets. They usually come with different nozzle sizes that you can alternate to create different pattern, for instance to draw a flower or to write a name. You may also want to buy icing tube. These little tubes of colorful icing comes in various flavor and made it easy to write names or add final touches to a design without smashing it.
Natural food coloring may also be useful for decorating birthday cakes and themed-cakes. To draw nice patterns on the cake, the best is to use cake stencils. They come in a variety of themed-packs, such as stars, flowers, swirls etc. Just sprinkle sugar through the stencil to make your design. And don't forget to buy a couple of small plastic toys (a train, a boat, trees, miniature monsters - the possibilities are endless!) to use as cake toppers.
Now, let's say you want to start decorating a birthday cake for your child. First, put the birthday cake in the freezer for a few hours. This will help to prevent the cake from crumbling when you decorate it. While your cake is in the freezer, hit the Internet and search for relevant images - this is your best tool for inspiration. First, pick the icing color for the background and use food coloring to achieve the effect. For instance, let's say you are going to for a football theme: use green coloring icing to make the field. Then, use the icing piping bags to mark the yard line and the number corresponding to the yard line. Pressure control is the key for neat decoration: keep it steady and even! With the tube of colorful icing, draw your kid's favorite team symbol. Finally, you can put a few little plastic players on the field to make it more realistic and to add another dimension to the cake.
Remember: decorating birthday cakes comes with practice. That's another excuse to celebrate more often!
