Defensive Softball Drills Book (Copyright 1998, 192 pages) $19.95 Many successful softball teams boast a sweet-swinging slugger or a can't-touch-this starting pitcher, but softball teams that win championships are built on a framework of solid team defense. In Defensive Softball Drills, Coach Mackie Joseph provides coaches with 66 proven drills for building this framework. She presents drills for learning and mastering skills at each position and for molding players into a finely tuned defensive unit. Recent trends in the sport-livelier balls, increased bat technology, the left-hand slapper, and, at the collegiate level, the greater distance from the pitching mound to the plate-have resulted in more offense. Defensive Softball Drills provides the practice tools to counteract those advantages to give teams the winning edge. All of the drills are accompanied by coaching points and detailed illustrations. The book also includes a handy drill finder for locating drills to work on specific areas and situations. The drills focus on: eliminating the big inning perfecting ball-catching skills employing an aggressive defensive style working on the mental aspect of defense The drills are geared toward middle and advanced level fastpitch players, but slow pitch players and beginning fastpitch players will benefit from them, too. About the Author Mackie Joseph is recognized as one of the top coaches in NCAA Division I softball. She has coached at Michigan State University (MSU) since 1993 and also is a USA Softball National Team coach, having participated at the USA Festival and for the Pan American qualifying team. At MSU, Joseph has led the Spartans to their best record and best Big Ten finish in school history. Prior to her MSU career, she coached Bowling Green University to a Mid-American Conference championship. Joseph was elected President of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association in 1994. This association represents all fastpitch coaches at the NCAA Division I, II, and III, junior college, NAIA, high school, and summer league levels. When she's not coaching softball, Joseph enjoys playing golf and reading. Fun Ideas for Softball Practice?
I coach a high school freshmen softball team and they played a game yesterday and they did soooo good. I have never seen them play like that. We have practice today and I wanted to add some fun drills or games into our practice to kinda reward them for doing such a great job. I was thinking like freeze tag, red light green light, nothing big and crazy, just fun... Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
If you have ever heard of ultimate frisbee you should play that, but not with a frisbee, play with a softball and their gloves. Use the outfield, and if the team gets the ball past the foul lines that is a touchdown. My team played that the otherday instead of conditioning and we all loved it!!!!!!!
It teaches them to have perfect throws, and sometimes they have to run for the ball, it's a fun game and we can all benifit from it.
If you don't like that idea I also suggest playing pepper!
Just incase you don't know what that is I'll explain it.
There is a batter who can't bat the ball the only thing they can do is bunt the ball. then you have everyone else stand in a line about 5-6 feet in front of the bunter, and they toss the bunter the ball, if the bunter misses the ball, the girl who threw the ball is now the bunter, if the bunter pops the ball up and a girl catches it, the girl that caught the ball is now the bunter. Another thing to add is that the girls fielding don't have too keep their feet planted then can move to grab a ball, they can dive... They just don't have to stay stationary.
Another really really really fun game I played during summer ball was when we split our team in half, and we made a line right down the middle, then we put ball buckets in a square playing area around that line, the teams stay lined up with the buckets on their side of the line, and someone has a ball. The girl with the ball throws the ball on the ground to make it a grounder to the other team,(however the ball has to hit the ground before it crosses the line onto the other teams playing area. If it doesn't land before it gets over the line the girl that threw it is out) So the girls throws the ball on the gound and makes a grounder for the other team to field, if the other team misses the ball, or lets the ball get behind them, the girl that made that mistake is out.The game goes until all members of one of the teams are eliminated.
