Improve Your Sports Workouts By Attending a Team Camp
Every athlete's sports workouts can be improved by attending a team camp. Training alone or in a small group is a great way to work out on a daily basis. However, there are many benefits to attending a team camp when possible. A camp generally hosts a larger number of athletes than the number required to make up one team. Therefore, the athletes have a larger variety of other athletes to compete against, as well as different personalities and different levels of strength and endurance. Playing against each other at a camp builds team camaraderie with the other camp members. Also, the coaches can better evaluate an athlete's overall player talent because the athlete is playing with a variety of other members in various game settings.
Because team camps draw a variety of athletes from all over, these camps are a great opportunity to work on team skills against similar opponents. A camp is a chance to break away from the normal training environment and have fun in a new setting, while still building team skills. Athletes can make new friends, and coaches and athletes alike can learn new skills and techniques from the other teams during the many sports workouts.
Attending a team camp often means traveling. Many athletes look forward to traveling to a new geographic area. A team that lives near the ocean feels like training in the mountains is a wonderful experience. It helps them look forward to the workouts and improves their overall performance.
I recently attended a team camp in Stevensville, MT, called the class A camp. This is a collection of class A level football teams in Montana. There were eight to ten teams attending this particular camp, and the camp was held for three days.
Some of the physical events tested in this camp were the pro agility, or short shuttle drill, the bench press for repetitions, the vertical jump, and the 40 yard dash. Height and weight were also evaluated by the various coaches. The data gathered at these camps is actually made available to college coaches that are recruiting.
The athletes at this camp bunked in the gymnasium, and had access to the locker rooms for all their hygienic needs. They practiced on the grounds of the school, and ate in the school cafeteria. The camp definitely provided a no nonsense environment so that the team members attending were very serious about their sports workouts.
Practices were held three times a day. Montana is still very light outside in June, so the athletes were able to practice in the morning, mid-day, and again at 9 p.m. All of the practices involved different drills that the athletes would encounter in a real game situation. Because of the frequent sports workouts, all athletes were able to play against all of the other 8-10 teams on a daily basis. This kept the practices exciting and competitive.
During a regular sports season, it would have taken the same athletes three months to play against that many other teams. The schedule this camp had set up gave all of the athletes a wonderful chance to play against a variety of different players and teams. This can quickly increase the skill level of any participating athlete. Some of the kids made drastic improvements that would have taken many weeks to master during a regular season.
New team members were able to integrate with the rest of the team a lot faster in this set up because the team is playing together so often. Now when the regular season begins, this team will function more as a team from the beginning, because they have spent so much time functioning this way already.
I believe every coach should pick a camp similar to this one to have their team attend. Team sports camps benefit athletes and coaches alike. It brings a new and exciting twist to practices that practicing alone does not. It can greatly improve every team's sports workouts.
