Shopping for Softball Mitts - The Greenhorn's Guide
It's exciting news that your baby has made it into the softball team. But expect the excitement to turn into frantic soon when it's time to buy softball accessories for your little bundle who is growing bigger before your eyes. If you need help shopping for the perfect softball mitt for your new player, make sure to remember the following tips:
First, take note of the size. By "size," we mean the size of the ball and not the size of the hand that will wear the softball mitt. The standard softball size is 11 inches. The smaller the hand of the wearer is, the bigger the pocket of the mitt should be because it has to be able to accommodate the ball snugly. However, make sure that the mitt is not too large. Otherwise, your child will find it too heavy to carry and will give him or her a more difficult time learning the beginner skills.
There are also certain specific considerations based on the type of ball that your child is starting with. For beginners using t-balls, a nine-inch mitt is typically perfect for your tot's tiny hand. You can even choose mitts in your child's favorite color. Expect your child to use the glove for about two years max before he or she graduates to something bigger.
For pigtail level starters, however, the perfect mitts are those that are 10 or 11 inches big, depending on how big the hand is and what size will fit it. At this point, too, your kid is expectedly excited to start playing and won't have time to break in the mitt. As such, it's best to get one that is soft and ready to be played with.
Finally, ponytail level starters will need mitts that are at least 11 inches in size. At this point, you have to expect your kid to play a lot more games than the previous levels, so it is important to get a mitt that is relatively more durable.
